Best Practices & Procedure for Boot Medium Partition Resize on HA Cluster

Older releases of Open-E JovianDSS (older than up28) created smaller partitions than the newest versions of our software. Updating the system to the latest version does not resize the partition. As increasing the partition size may be in some cases necessary, we present a detailed step-by-step procedure below.

To successfully complete the update process it is required to reinstall Open-E JovianDSS on both nodes using the latest software release.

Obtain the following information below as you will need this to complete the full installation:

  • Serial Number (This can be obtained from the GUI in the “About” notification and/or your Portal from the Open-E website)
  • Product Key (This can be obtained from the GUI in the “About” notification and/or your Portal from the Open-E website)
  • Storage License Keys (This can be obtained from the GUI in the “About” notification and/or your Portal from the Open-E website)
  • HA and or Metro Cluster Keys (This can be obtained from the GUI in the “About” notification and/or your Portal from the Open-E website)
  • Check for any Small Updates and store them in the same location where you will be saving the Settings that is related to the particular system (If you are not sure where to find these check in the GUI in System Settings -> Update -> Small Update, take note of the Small Update name so that later you can install this before connecting back to the Cluster. If you do not have the Small Update file or you are worried the one you have is outdated then reach out to our Support Team and provide the name of the Small Update you require.

Before proceeding it is also important to identify all boot medium disks on both Cluster nodes.
Hint: To Identify your boot medium disk(s) go to System Settings -> System -> Boot medium and click "Blink" to enable LED blinking for your boot medium disks

Data stored on the Pools is not lost in the process

In the case of a cluster there is no downtime required

WARNING: notify us about the scheduled operation by sending an email to pre-sales@open-e.com
This way we will be able to prepare your licenses accordingly for reinstallation

1.  Save settings on both cluster nodes
System Settings -> Settings management -> Save current settings

2.  Download settings on both cluster nodes
System Settings -> Settings management -> Options -> Download
Hint: rename the downloaded settings file to contain the node name

3.  Delete all auto-saved and manually saved settings on both cluster nodes
System Settings -> Settings management -> Options -> Delete

4.  Download logs on both cluster nodes
Diagnostics -> Logs -> Download all

5.  Delete old Logs on both cluster nodes
Diagnostics -> Logs -> Delete archived logs

6.  Disable (‘Pause’) all replication tasks on both nodes
Backup & Recovery -> Options -> Disable task

7.  Move all pools to the active node and reboot the second (passive) node
Go to the active node and press Options -> Move for each Pool imported on this node
Wait for the Move operation to finish for each Pool

8. Shutdown the passive node and format the boot medium disk to remove Open-E JovianDSS partition completely
To format the disk you can remove it from the node and format it using a separate OS of your liking or use a bootable USB stick with your favourite OS and perform a format using tools provided there

9. Install the newest version of Open-E JovianDSS downloaded from our website on your boot medium
link to the page with the newest ISO file: https://www.open-e.com/download/open-e-jovian-data-storage-software/

10. Boot the newest Open-E JovianDSS installation

11. Configure the management network interface and enter the GUI
Go to the Text User Interface (TUI):
Open Network Interfaces (hotkey: ctrl-alt-N) -> Choose proper interface and configure the Network settings (provide proper IP, netmask, gateway etc.)

12. Provide valid license keys you have used on this node before

13. Upload previously downloaded system settings for this node
System Settings -> Settings management -> Upload settings file
Choose both "System and storage settings" and "Pools settings" - a reboot is required for the new settings to take place
After the reboot double-check if all the settings were restored (e.g. if everything is right under the Failover settings tab)

14. After that the cluster is re-established. Move the Pool to the newly updated node
Go to the active node -> Choose Options in the Pool menu -> Move

Warning: At this point, the notification to upgrade the filesystem can be displayed. Downgrade to the previous system version is not possible after the filesystem upgrade. Before you upgrade the file system, make sure you completed all steps so far and check if the system works properly
Choose Options in the Pool menu -> Upgrade filesystem

Warning: At this point, the notification to "Increase the stability by upgrading the volblocksize of the system volume to 64 kB on all pools" can be displayed. This process may take a while and will require additional storage space depending on the Used space in your Pool. Before proceeding, make sure you completed all steps so far and check if the system works properly
Choose Options in the Pool menu -> Upgrade Upgrade system volume

15. Shutdown the passive node and format the boot medium disk to remove Open-E JovianDSS partition completely

16. Install the newest version of Open-E JovianDSS downloaded from our website on your boot medium
link to the page with the newest ISO file: https://www.open-e.com/download/open-e-jovian-data-storage-software/

17. Boot the newest Open-E JovianDSS installation

18. Configure the management network and enter the GUI
In the Text User Interface (TUI):
Open Network Interfaces (hotkey: ctrl-alt-N) -> Choose proper interface and configure the Network settings

19. Provide valid and released license keys you have used on this node before

20. Upload previously downloaded system settings for this node
System Settings -> Settings management -> Upload settings file
Choose both "System and storage settings" and "Pools settings" - a reboot is required for the new settings to take place
After the reboot double-check if all the settings were restored (e.g. if everything is right under the Failover settings tab, if AD settings were restored, if Replication tasks are reconfigured)

21. As a final test, move the Pool again the the other node
Go to the active node -> Choose Options in the Pool menu -> Move
